Parents play a huge role in developing a child's ability to learn and love an instrument. At home practice is expected just like homework in order for a child to succeed. Parents are the at home teachers. Attending weekly lessons, following weekly lesson notes and using instructional tools provided by Mrs. Bowman will help your child grow and progress.

How often should my child be practicing?

  • Ages 3-5, 10 to 15 minutes a day
  • Ages 6-8, 15-20 minutes a day
  • Ages 8-10, 20-25 minutes a day
  • Ages 10-12, 30 minutes a day
  • 12 and up, 45-60 minutes per day
    • This also depends on Suzuki Volume Level. If a child is more advanced, some extra practice time may be needed.

I am having a difficult time getting my child to practice the full amount of time, what should I do?

  • Find a time each day that will work as a routine for the child. Children love routines.
    • Try every morning before school or
    • After getting home from school
    • Before or after dinner/before bed time
  • Try breaking up practice time into sections: a little bit of time in the morning, a little bit of time at night.

My child just doesn't seem to be interested in learning violin, should I let them quit?

  • The Suzuki Method follows the belief that "Every Child Can". Just like a child learns their mother tongue language, they will learn an instrument.
  • Parents that help their child with practice at home have a higher success rate of achieving their goals.
